Recombinant Zoster (shingles) Vaccine

Who should receive this vaccine?

The CDC recommends the following groups receive the shingles vaccine:

  • Adults 50 years and older

  • Adults 19 years and older who have a weakened immune system because of disease or treatments

Does this vaccine cause shingles?

No, the CDC has stated that the recombinant zoster vaccine does not cause shingles.

What else should I know?

The shingles vaccine may be given at the same time as other vaccines.

 

Additionally, the shingles vaccine is given as a two-dose series. For most people, the second dose should be given 2 to 6 months after the first dose. Some people who have or will have a weakened immune system can get the second dose 1 to 2 months after the first dose.
